President's Report Christmas 2011

Merry Christmas Villagers,

Christmas has come and gone, but I hope you had time to go to the craft market last month or the Christmas in the Village earlier in December.  If not, there’s always next year for shopping locally and finding a gift along 13th Ave. With such a variety of stores, there’s a range to choose from!

Safeway presented their modified plans on November 22nd at the Neighbourhood Centre.  You can see the drawings at our website, www.cathedralvillage.org Alterations include windows on the western side, more brickwork and decorative trim, extra lighting on the eastern side, and room for public art and more vegetation around the sidewalk.  The curving marina roof will disappear as most likely will the existing neon sign and the Bob Boyer mural.  All contentious issues addressed at what was a lengthy discussion of important aspects to the supermarket redesign.

Both the City and Safeway, I think, have been surprised at how strident our area has been in pushing for what they believe to be important considerations in the design of the store.  It’s our neighbourhood, after all.

CACA has run a non-scientific survey on our website, and about 70% of respondents prefer a larger store with more services and products, and better exterior design features.  27% prefer the store as it is. The big question is what people consider an improvement, and what they cannot live with, as views differ. CACA welcomes your comments as we try to represent the views of all concerned. The Planning Commission will review the application in January. Some details are at: http://www.regina.ca/Page1450.aspx

Cathedral Village Arts Festival News:  Planning is well underway for the 2012 Festival, Rain or Shine.  A celebration of the past 20 years of Festivals is the 60 min “Hat’s Off” DVD which is available for $10. The annual Taste of Cathedral fundraiser will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2012. Tickets are $20 and are available at the office - they make great Christmas Gifts!

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and a fabulous New Year.  All the Best to our readers in 2012!

President's Report, October 2011

G’day Villagers,

Welcome to another edition of the Village Voice.

Safeway has responded to residents’ views on how the 13th Ave store will be upgraded. Their revised proposal improved some aspects, while keeping the basic size and look of the store.  Come to the Public Meeting at the Cathedral Neighbourhood Centre on Tuesday, November 22nd at 7.30 pm to find out more. Tell us what you think, on Facebook or Twitter.

Our annual Community Cleanup was held on Oct 1st and resulted in filling 3 skips with your unwanted treasure.  A big thank you to the volunteers, for their time, their trucks, and Loraas for providing the skips!

Some more events to note:  read it now, below.

President's Report, June 2011

G’day, Villagers and other readers!

First off, it is post-Arts Festival Time, so this means that huge thanks are again due to all the too-numerous-to-mention Festival volunteers. There were over 160 of you, assembled and cajoled by Dena and Sheila, into doing whatever it took to make the 20th Anniversary Festival the success it was.

Three of the four seasons visited us during Festival week, but we got away with it once again. People came out in good numbers to see the many events in the churches, under the big top, the restaurants, and the clubs.  Thanks to the owners of these venues for their assistance and association with the CVAF. This year, the Festival Committee invested in some grander acts like Holofon or long-term art projects.  I think they paid off, and I applaud their efforts.

President's Report, Fall 2011

Hello Villagers,

As you read this, I hope that your summer has been a good one, with vacations, road trips, or just hanging around at home and catching up on stuff.

I should remind you here of some housekeeping notes here, of events to come:

  • ·         Registration night for fall programmes was Sept. 13: You can still check out the Rec programmes listed in this issue. See what interests you, but be warned that some programs fill up quickly.
  • ·         Our Community Clean-up is on Oct 1: we can always do with a few more volunteers for an hour or so of your time in the morning.  The neighbourhood really benefits from a cleaner environment in so many ways.
  • ·         Bring out your junk! The Festival Garage Sale is Oct 15.  Need to de-clutter? Rearrange your Sheng Fui? Buy someone else’s treasure at a sweet price? This sale is for you.
